(PRESSI.COM 12/30/2003) --Ultimate pop superstar to be crowned Jan. 1 in one-hour results show--

TORONTO, Dec. 29 -- Almost 2 million viewers tuned in to CTV on Christmas Day to cheer on Canadian Idol winner Ryan Malcolm in his bid to capture the World Idol crown. The two-hour special, which saw 11 competitors from around the world battle each other for global bragging rights as the world's ultimate pop superstar, was the most-watched program of the day - more than double the next highest audience (CTV's ER) - and peaked at 2.2 million viewers during the last half hour (9:30 - 10 p.m.).(*) The audience is even more impressive considering viewing on Christmas Day is approximately 40 per cent lower than average.

The second part of World Idol, a one-hour results show hosted by popular U.K. television hosts Ant and Dec, will be staged in London on New Year's Day and broadcast on CTV from 9-10 p.m. ET. In the special, the results of voting from 11 countries around the world will be revealed, leading to the crowning of the first World Idol. Ben Mulroney will appear in the international broadcast, presenting Canada's ranking of the 10 competitors vying for the crown, in addition to Canadian Idol winner Ryan Malcolm. As well as an international group rendition of the Beatles' classic All You Need is Love by the 11 Idols, the results show also features a performance by pop superstar Sir Elton John.

To level the playing field in terms of population differences between countries, World Idol producers implemented a voting system that ranks the competitors and assigns points. Canadian viewers voted by toll-free telephone for two hours following the conclusion of last week's special for the competitors from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Pan-Arabia, Poland, South Africa, United Kingdom and United States.

Malcolm automatically "wins" Canada with 12 points. The competitor who garnered the most votes will receive 10 points while the competitor with second-highest vote tally will receive nine points all the way through to the competitor who scores the fewest votes who will score one point. The points each Idol gets from each country will be tallied and added together by an independent vote management company to determine their overall position in the contest. The competitor who has finished with the highest combined point-total will be crowned World Idol.

World Idol performed extremely well for broadcasters around the globe:

- In Germany, Superstar weltweit was the best prime-time show in the key target group of 14-49 year olds with 22.5 per cent market share.

- In Poland, World Idol was the number-one show in its time slot, and the second highest-rated show of the day on Polish television with 4.5 million viewers and a share of 28.6 per cent.

- In the Netherlands, World Idol was the number-one show in its time slot with a share of 25.8 per cent.

- In Australia, World Idol was the highest-rated show of the day across all networks with an average audience of 2.4 million viewers.

- In Belgium, World Idol was far and away the most-watched program over the Christmas period with a staggering 42.1 per cent market share.

- In the United States, World Idol was the number-one show of the day amongst Adults 18-34. The last time FOX ranked No. 1 on a Thursday night in that demo (excluding sports) was over five years ago. FOX outperformed its prior 03/04 season average on Thursday nights (excluding sports) by +59 per cent in Adults 18-49 (2.7/9 vs. 1.7/5) and +55 per cent in Total Viewers.

Why Kelly Clarkson wants to rock on her next album -- America's ''World Idol'' competitor talks about her Grammy nomination, her tour, and more by Brian Hiatt

America will be represented worldwide this winter by a strong-voiced Texan -- and it's not George W. Bush. ''American Idol'' winner Kelly Clarkson is taking on competition from 10 countries on Fox's ''World Idol,'' with the winner set to be revealed Jan. 1 on Fox. Meanwhile, Clarkson is preparing for her first headlining tour, set for February, and working on songs for her follow-up to this year's double-platinum ''Thankful.'' Clarkson -- who nabbed a Grammy nomination for her hit ''Miss Independent'' -- tells EW.com about performing barefoot, getting inspired by Jimi Hendrix, and continuing to believe in Justin Guarini.

Are you friends with Clay and Ruben?
We don't, like, have sleepovers or anything. We're not best friends or anything, but I've hung out with Clay more than five times. So when you're in town together, you go out for dinner. It's like work -- if you have people you work with, you hang out with them. I actually hang out with Tamyra [Gray] more than anyone.

How about your movie costar, Justin Guarini -- have you talked to him since he apparently got dropped from his label?
Yeah. It's more of a sad thing for the record label because they just let go of a super-talented guy -- he plays piano, guitar, he writes music, he sings, and he's gorgeous. I don't understand what happened there. But I think he's already working with other people. Sometimes you don't fit somewhere and you fit better someplace else.

So he's holding up okay?
Oh God, yes.

How do you feel about doing a headlining tour?
I can't wait. I'm a completely different person when you see me perform on TV and then in person. Just because you've got to be a little more reserved on TV for all the housewives [laughs], and you can't really jump around -- you have only 5 feet to move in. And I love for people to hear me live, because it's usually better. On the CD, you record your stuff, and later on you figure out, ''Oh, I should done this or that,'' which you get to do in the live show.

Will your show have big, Britney-style production?
I'm not big into confetti or pyro. I love going to shows like that, but for myself, it's me and my band and having a blast onstage. Great lighting, great sound, and that's about it. And I'm usually barefoot.

Um, why?
That's how I'm most comfortable. I like my feet to be on the ground. I like to jump around, I like to fly across the stage.

I heard you screamed when you heard about your Grammy nomination.
It was on air, in Minneapolis -- I was doing a radio interview and I flipped out. I was doing a [phone interview] and my manager told me I got nominated for a Grammy and I went AWOL -- left the phone and screamed. I came back and started apologizing. It's EXCITING. I know there's plenty of people going, [in blasé voice] ''Oh yeah, I got nominated.'' They can play cool guy, but you know inside they're flipping out.

And what are you thinking about for your next album?
Hopefully it'll be out in the last quarter of 2004. On the first album, I wanted to showcase the versatility factor -- the fact that I like rock, I like soulful music, I like pop The next one is going to go deeper into rock and soul. There's gonna be more hardcore soul, more along the lines of a Jimi Hendrix, bluesy sound. Like bluesy rock. At the same time, there might be a big, huge ballad that comes up that I love. You never know with me. I like everything, so I'm not gonna limit myself.

According to a recent survey, approximately 50 million Americans make New Year's resolutions at the end of every year--but American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson isn't one of them. Clarkson told LAUNCH that she does not believe in making New Year's resolutions.

"I don't believe in 'em, funny enough. Because every time I make 'em I always end up lying to myself and I break it," Clarkson says. "You know when you're not supposed to do something it's in the back of your head and you end up wanting to do it more."

Clarkson can next be seen on World Idol, a two-part special airing the evenings of Christmas, December 25 and New Year's Day, January 1, on Fox-TV. She will compete in London with winners from 10 other countries. The competition will air at 8 p.m. ET on Christmas Day and 9 p.m. ET on New Year's Day. Viewers worldwide will be able to vote for the World Idol winner.

Elton John will perform on the final-results show, according to Fox.

Kelly Clarkson was briefly mentioned in a news article on album sales on MTV.com

"Five female artists are tied for having double-platinum albums, though Beyoncé's Dangerously in Love, which sold more than 2.3 million copies, will likely be the best-selling album by a woman. Hilary Duff's Metamorphosis, with more than 2.1 million sold, will rank next, followed by Kelly Clarkson's Thankful, Celine Dion's One Heart and Britney Spears' In the Zone".

World Idol

Kelly Clarkson has recently competed for the title of World Idol which was aired here in the U.S. duting Christmas. Seeing Kelly perform again in a competition made my Christmas much better : )
As you all know, Simon Cowell stood up for Kelly when the Canadian judge, Zak Werner, said she was shouting with tone (and you know the rest). Well, the other judges didn't think so.
Does Kelly have a good chance that she's gonna win this? Yes, she does, she is already known world wide and have fan bases all over the world. Although some people may be Kelly haters, they still can't stop the power of Kelly lovers cuz we rock like that! LOL :)
Check out the "RORC" and see what I have to say about each performance. (Not that you care)
